What is wrong with the people today?
I just to vent for a minute. Many time black people constantly talk about how the "man" is keeping them down and that EVERYBODY is a racist. Well coming from a Black female I would have to say that's a bunch of crap. This guy over at Mathew Henson stated "You know sista, the white folks want us to be controlled so they put us in these houses/projects to watch our every move". I had to let him know what time it was. I was not born rich but my parents wanted to live a certain way. We never lived in the projects because my mother thought that was "lazy livin". We always had a nice home and a nice car and there may have been times when the bills may have overwhelmed them but we never knew it. Today I am the same way as my parents. I told that old fart that those people have a choice. The system is not designed to be a generational thing. It is put in place to help you move ahead in life. For instance, in my opinion if you decide to go to school then you can ask the state to help you with food and shelter until you graduate. Same thing for trade school but to feel that you are "made" to live in public housing really makes me mad. I come from Pasadena CA where a shack can run you 250k and living in AZ was a nice change. This state is very affordable and believe it or not it does help those in need, minority or otherwise. I cant stand for people to think that they are owed something. How can you complain when the stuff your getting is free?

The children of Public Housing
I sat in my car and watched two children play jump rope. I was thinking back to when I was that young and did not have a care in the world. The place that I called home (as I remember it) was nice. It was nice to me because the children of that area was nice. It was a brand new home and a diverse community and if memory serves everyone went to work every morning. Before those kids were born the community that they live in was something out of a horror story. The city cleaned it up as best as they could but the scars are still present for those of us that knew what it was like before. Will these children really find peace in a place that brought sorrow to so many at one time or another?
What is Poverty
When meeting with the families in Mathew Henson I noticed that many people were happy with the situation they were in. I do not mean that they strive to be in public housing, but the fact that now live in a better place regardless of the location. I admire the fact that they don't care about what other people think. They don't ask to have a BMW in the driveway. They don't thrive to have fancy shoes or handbags. They are proud that they made the right decision to live in a nice community after living in what they described as "Viet Nam".
Is it a crime for families to settle in public housing without striving for a place of their own or should they consider the place they live "their own"?
